WHAT IS CERT?

Why Take CERT Classes?

1. Be Prepared for Emergencies
In a major disaster—earthquake, wildfire, flood, or otherwise—first responders may be overwhelmed. CERT training empowers everyday residents to act effectively for themselves, family, and their communities until professional help arrives.

2. Gain Hands-On, Practical Skills
Rather than theoretical learning, the curriculum covers real-world techniques, including deploying fire extinguishers, performing triage, caring for injuries like burns or sprains, and conducting victim removal using safe rescue methods.

3. Connect with Neighbors and Build Community Resilience
Training fosters camaraderie and local cohesion. As one CERT volunteer put it, the program enabled teamwork across diverse individuals and "shared experiences of serving the community"—a rewarding and fun way to contribute locally.

CERT training is offered at no cost, with no obligation to sign up for active duty during disasters. Completion simply earns you certification and the peace of mind of knowing you’re better prepared.

STARTING IN SEPTEMBER 2025 – 3 venues to take a free CERT class:
Class 1 – Introduction, Disaster Awareness, Go-Bags/Shelter in Place
Class 2 – Incident Command Structure and Disaster Psychology
Class 3 – Disaster Medical pt1: Treating life threatening conditions/basic first aid
Class 4 – Disaster Medical pt2: Mass Casualty Incidents/Re-assessing/stabilizing
Class 5 – Fire Suppression and Hazardous Materials
Class 6 – Light Search and Rescue
Class 7 - Terrorism & CERT & Graduation!

MAKEUP CLASSES
While students must attend all classes to receive a “Certificate of Completion”; LAFD allows for
students to take a missed session with another CERT class. In this cycle, there will be 3 classes running
at the same time to allow students to graduate on time.

If a class shows full, feel free to show up at class time since people forget to cancel tickets.
